Questions About Potty Training
At what age should I start potty training?
The average age to start potty training is 27 months. HOWEVER, we will review a potty training readiness questionnaire in order to determine if your child is demonstrating signs to start the potty training process. Please keep in mind that if your child has a developmental or medical diagnosis, it may impact their readiness regardless of age.
Why don't you recommend starting potty training under the age of 2?
Children under the age of two are still developing their expressive language, self-help skills, and their cognition. All of these skills are needed in the potty training process. So many milestones develop even between the ages of 18-24 months. Also, physically their bladder isn’t fully developed yet.
Do you recommend the use of rewards?
During your potty training consultation, we will discuss pros and cons of using a reward system and it will be reiterated in your potty plan as well. Ultimately, the decision is up to you and your family. If you do decide to use rewards, I do not recommend using food items as that may establish a unhealthy relationship with food.
I'm not sure if now is the right time to start potty training my child, what should I do?
You can contact us for a free 15 minute consultation and we can help you navigate this process.
Will my child still have accidents after they are potty trained?
Yes your child will still have accidents. With anything, they are going to still need to learn this new routine. Go into the potty training process knowing that accidents are still going to happen and nighttime potty training won’t be well established until closer to the age of 4-5. If you ever have concerns regarding irregular urination or bowel movement patterns in your child, always contact your child’s pediatrician.
